Visitor Information

Venus Bay

Venus Bay
has been nicknamed Victoria’s “longest sandpit”.
The small town along Bass Strait in South Gippsland offers wide beaches, which are suitably named beach number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. These beaches are sure to please the keen surfer or surf fisherman. There’s plenty of space, 22km by one estimate, for beachside fun and isolation, but be careful in the sometimes dangerous waters. Thankfully beach number 1 is patrolled during summer.

Venus Bay is home to a colourful cast of characters and it has a general store and other food outlets.

This piece of paradise is about 170km from Melbourne.

Just a few kilometres from Venus Bay is another small town, Tarwin Lower. It’s on the lower reaches of the Tarwin River, which is the ideal place to go fishing when you want a break from the beach. Alternatively appreciate the river scenery with a stroll along the boardwalk. You’ll also enjoy the local art and craft outlets, general store that provides information and Tarwin Hotel.

Point Smythe Reserve is the piece of land where Bass Strait meets Anderson Inlet and it has walking trails through thick coastal vegetation. It offers lots of wildlife and views of Anderson Inlet. The Point Smythe nature trail is 6km long. This reserve is the beginning of the Cape Liptrap Coastal Park.
