There’s only one way to discover that Koonwarra really is a “small town with a big heart” and that’s by visiting it. The village prides itself on its blessed position; surrounded by productive farmland with many beaches and mountains nearby.

Koonwarra features a range of boutique shops specialising in aromatherapy and beauty products, clothing and furniture and organic produce. A cooking school and near-by winery offer opportunities for activity and relaxation. Golf can be played at the Leongatha Golf Club a short drive away or at Woorayl Golf Club in Leongatha. The famous Koonwarra store is a must visit for local wine and its seasonal menu.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the region on the first Saturday of each month make a stop at the South Gippsland Farmers Market at the recreation reserve. This stunning reserve, on Fowler and Buckinghams Road, is surrounded by beautiful trees. As the deciduous tree leaves fall in autumn it look particularly stunning.

The Great Southern Rail Trail offers a relaxed walk, bike ride or horse ride through farmland towards Leongatha from Koonwarra.

Koonwarra is home to South Gippsland’s premier cattle selling complex on the South Gippsland Highway. Animals are sold here Wednesdays, every second Thursday, and Fridays in the warmer months. If you’re seeking an authentic country atmosphere or want to meet some real life working farmers the undercover facility is well worth a stop.

Koonwarra is also a place of contrasts. While it’s famous for it’s commitment to sustainability there are also plenty of big houses; home to some of the regions most successful individuals. Leongatha is just 8km down the road and offers all the country town shopping options you’ll need for your stay.
